Ok so I was surfing around web forums - hotbeds of free-for-all abuse; thankfully ours seems to have gotten off lightly of recent months but thats for a different Blog entirely - as I was saying, surfing Samoan web forums I came across the term 'Matupalapala' and was very interested to find out if anyone had heard of it.
Apparently, according to one learned respondant, the term applies specifically to the Malietoa title as it was gained due to the "heroic deeds" of the first Malietoa (dont worry, I'm not going to tell the story!).
What a great name for our Reunion thinks I - but, worries I, maybe this is just someone's construct (ie. total pepelo) - so faamolemole talanoa mai if any of you have heard of or are aware that this term is for real (or not).
Peace and Love.
No, worries, dear! I think you're right on point! I'd say lets waive the semantics for our family historians and linguists(lol) for further review since there are many versions that are rampant on web forums--
ReplyDeleteNonetheless, the terminology 'matupalapala' is befitting based on its general definition (heroic deeds, wisdom, gifted, etc.) and application in the everyday Gagana Samoa.
IMHO, it defines the essence of our forefathers..their vision, dedication and service to their country.. and most important their role in Samoan History (religion, politics, social, and sex education (haha). Okay...so omit the latter, er, um,...auoi! I need a green bottle!
Iva loving the "Legacy Reunion 2012" gives me the goose bumps thinking about the marketing potential!!!
ReplyDeleteExactly - it'll be a headliner! ;-)
ReplyDeleteThe greatest thing since sliced bread (lol). Ofa atu
